VA Automobile Grant

The VA Automobile Grant is a one-time allowance grant worth up to $21,058. It’s offered to qualified Veterans and service members buying any car, new or used, are who are challenged by any of the following: the loss (or permanent loss of use) of one or both feet or one or both hands; permanent impairment of vision in both eyes; a severe burn injury; or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (also known as Lou Gehrig's disease).

To apply, you must meet the eligibility requirements listed on the VA’s website, and turn in a completed VA Form 21-4502, Application for Automobile or Other Conveyance and Adaptive Equipment. 

Note 1: The VA does not pay the individual directly; they pay the licensed automobile seller.

VA Automobile Special Adaptive Equipment Grant

For qualified Veterans or service members who suffer from the above, or from service-connected joint mobility issues due to ankylosis in one or both knees or hips, you may be eligible for the VA Automobile Special Adaptive Equipment Grant.

To apply, again you’ll need to meet the eligibility requirements, then fill out two copies of a VA Form 10-1394, Application for Adaptive Equipment—Motor Vehicle. 

But as the form states, you should call a Prosthetics Service at your local VA medical center or outpatient clinic before doing anything. After you turn in your form, the VA will complete Part II and you’ll turn in a copy to the seller/vendor upon approval.

Note: The VA may opt to pay your or pay the seller directly.
